Ken Follett

A very readable account of the build-up to World War I, this is Ken Follett’s first entry in his Century Trilogy. As usually, Mr. Follet knows how to create characters with light brush strokes, yet grow them into incredibly three-dimensional creatures. My favorites include the one-eyed female reporter and Billy from the Welsh coal mines. The subject of WWI smells a little of dusty school-days but Mr. Follett takes it and runs with it—bringing it alive by making it the story of many disparate characters. One of his best.
